3 Weeks

Today, Huxley turns 3 weeks old. These past few weeks have been amazing, interesting, heartening, and exhausting.

It sounds a bit cliche after hearing it constantly over the past several months, but it is true. There is nothing like the joy of having a baby. Huxley seems to somehow add more completeness to the family.

We've appreciated all the visits and support from our family and friends. It is fantastic to know that Huxley has a circle of love surrounding and nurturing him.

We are finally starting to figure out our pattern. huxley is falling into a rhythm of feedings, diapers, and naps. He's even started to have some play times during the day where he likes to practice what we have decided to call, baby-foo - little kicks and punches.

Another cliche that we've heard over and over is that Huxley's childhood will pass in a flash.  I hope that one proves untrue...

Umbilical Cord

I accidentally knocked Huxley's umbilical cord off during a diaper change today. There was a tiny amount of blood, and I freaked and called the emergency line for our pediatrician. The nurse I spoke with was like, "so why are you calling?" She told me to apply pressure to stop the bleeding and call back if it doesn't stop within ten minutes. It seems like very basic first aid, but I'm still in my post delivery fog and he's only eight days old. It was about time for the umbilical cord to fall off anyway. They normally fall off within 7-10 days. It seemed like a major crisis at the time, but really isn't a big deal.

I Suggest Buying Pampers Stock

Huxley has proven to be quite a productive member of the family.

We have exhausted our supply of newborn diapers already. He has gone through about 15 diapers a day. The books we have promise that he'll be slowing down soon. I sure hope so - because that garbage bag we have duct-taped to him is going to fill up eventually...

Forever in a Day

For so many reasons, December 29th was a forever day...

Most of all, our lives changed forever when little Huxley entered our lives. From now on we will no longer be the two of us - we are the family. Every priority and goal we have has now shifted to making Huxley's life the best it can be. He is the symbol of our unity and love and the most incredible fruit of our union as man and wife.

Though it has only been a few days, it seems like forever ago when he was not a part of our lives. pregnancy did nearly nothing to prepare us for the feelings we now have. Everything changed the moment he arrived. Our former life was so different that it feels like it was a hundred years ago.

The wonder and mystery of labor also makes the 29th a forever day. Nothing about the process of birth felt natural. Birth was a painful, fearful experience that makes one question everything in life. No matter how long we live, we will forever remember how profound the experience of that day was. Experiencing the trials of birth shows one that the only thing that matters in life are the bonds we have to others - because they are the ones that see us through tough times. Christa and I needed each other; and in being there we learned how to care for Huxley - forever...

First Night with Baby

The first night was off to a rough start due to being discharged pretty late in the evening, well late for me.  I'm a morning person.  We couldn't be discharged until at least 48 hours after Huxley's birth, which meant we wouldn't be discharged until around 7pm on New Years Eve.  Of course, we didn't have any plans except for taking care of our newborn son, but leaving so late left little time for us to get our new family settled at home.

Grandpa Bill helped us out to the car.  He was there with Cheryl who had been admitted earlier that day for foot surgery.  He thought he'd see his grandson off from the hospital.  Huxley looked adorable in his newborn/puppy outfit.  It was the only newborn outfit he had and he didn't fit into it for more than a couple of weeks.  We all got Huxley bundled up and headed out of the hospital on a rainy New Year's Eve.

Just as we exited the hospital we encountered an idiot driver going the wrong way coming right at us.  Our first of many scares with our little one.  Upon arriving home we tried to got settled in with baby and tried to head off to sleep.

Between checking to make sure he was still breathing, to him not really sleeping, neither of us slept a wink that night.  Huxley was a hungry little guy and mostly wanted to eat all night long.  I didn't think I would be staying up to ring in the New Year, but I knew without looking at the clock that 2008 was here when I heard fireworks going off close by.  I was sitting on the couch feeding Huxley and trying not to doze off.

We spent the night not only trying to get Huxley to sleep, but also trying to figure out how to care for something completely new and foreign to us.  We didn't know whether or not to swaddle or put him in his sleep bag.  We didn't know what size clothing he would fit in and had to try on several before we found what worked.

This is only the beginning of many sleepless nights to come....
